San Diego Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. has filed a lawsuit against Big League Advance (BLA), seeking to void a contract he signed as a teenager.
The deal, struck in 2017 when Tatis was just 17 years old, provided him with $2 million upfront in exchange for 10 percent of his future earnings.
After securing a 14-year, $340 million contract with the Padres in 2021, the agreement meant he would owe BLA an estimated $34 million.

Allegations of Exploitation
In his legal filing, Tatis and his attorneys describe the deal as “exploitative” and “predatory,” targeting young players from economically disadvantaged Latin American backgrounds.

His legal team argues the arrangement functioned as an illegal loan and pressured minors into agreements they couldn’t fully understand.
Tatis said in a press release that he wants to hold BLA accountable for practices that he believes harm vulnerable athletes.
Fighting for Young Players
Tatis has emphasized that the lawsuit is not just about his personal finances but about protecting others.
“I’m fighting this battle not just for myself but for everyone still chasing their dream,” he stated.
His goal is to ensure that young prospects can focus on developing their talent without the burden of unfair financial contracts.

A Career in the Spotlight
The case has attracted significant attention in the baseball world, as it could reshape how companies like BLA operate.
Tatis, now 26, has already established himself as one of the sport’s brightest stars, with over 140 career home runs and 100 stolen bases in six seasons.

As the lawsuit moves forward, the outcome may not only affect Tatis’s future but also set a precedent for protecting the next generation of players.
