Jim Irsay, the late owner of the Indianapolis Colts, spent decades building one of the world’s most valuable private collections of music, sports, and cultural memorabilia.

His treasure trove includes David Gilmour’s Black Fender Stratocaster, Jerry Garcia’s Tiger, Bob Dylan’s Newport Stratocaster, and Kurt Cobain’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” Mustang.

Beyond guitars, Irsay also secured the world’s only complete Beatles drum kit, the original manuscript of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, and Muhammad Ali’s 1974 championship belt.

In 2023, Irsay revealed he had been offered $1.15 billion by a Middle Eastern group to sell the entire collection and move it to Dubai.

He turned the offer down, insisting that the collection’s true value lay in its cultural heritage: “You can’t get Garcia’s Tiger anymore. You can’t get Gilmour’s Strat or the Beatles drum kit. It’s just not out there.”

Generosity Beyond the Spotlight

But Irsay wasn’t only a collector. He was known just as much for his quiet philanthropy and kindness.

While some of his larger donations were well-documented — including more than $17 million toward mental health initiatives and substantial gifts to hospitals, the Indianapolis Zoo, and Indiana University — many of his most impactful gestures went unnoticed during his lifetime.

Stories have since emerged of Irsay covering funeral costs for grieving families, often with the stipulation that his generosity remain private.

He frequently sent flowers to memorials, sometimes for people with only the most tangential connection to the Colts.

His compassion extended into everyday life for employees too — every Colts staff member received $100 on their birthday, a small but heartfelt way Irsay showed he valued them.

A Leadership Legacy in Transition

Irsay passed away in May 2025 at the age of 65, leaving behind not only his team and collection but also an enduring spirit of giving.

His three daughters — Carli, Casey, and Kalen Irsay — have stepped in to lead the Colts, continuing the family’s commitment to both the franchise and the broader Indianapolis community.

Preserving Culture and Compassion

Through his unmatched collection and acts of generosity, Irsay’s legacy bridges culture and humanity.

He gave fans the chance to experience history — from guitars once played by legends to championship relics that defined eras — while also uplifting countless lives through his philanthropy.

In the end, Jim Irsay wasn’t just a billionaire collector or NFL owner.
