DeForest Buckner, the powerhouse defensive tackle for the Indianapolis Colts, made a bold move from the sunny Bay Area to the heartland of Indiana after being traded from the San Francisco 49ers in 2020.

“Indiana has definitely gotten to feel like home,” he shares.

Moving into their new house, the Buckners were greeted by welcoming neighbors bearing gift baskets—a small-town gesture that caught them by surprise. “We were kind of in shock because we weren’t used to that,” Buckner admits.

“He loves seeing all the animals,” Buckner notes about their frequent visits to the Indianapolis Zoo, where his son’s eyes light up around the exhibits.

“She sent me a bunch of pictures,” Buckner recalls with a smile.

With meetings shifted online and offseason training (OTAs) canceled, Buckner was able to stay home for the first three months of his son’s life.

“I was there to help my wife in the middle of the night when he was crying or to change his diapers,” he reflects.

This uninterrupted family time laid the foundation for a close bond with his son, a connection that Buckner treasures.

The Indiana winters brought a new set of challenges, especially for a family used to the mild climate of Northern California.

Buckner recalls his wife bundling up their son to explore the snowy outdoors. “He gets out there, and his face is all red and he’s freezing,” Buckner laughs.
