Oprah Winfrey transformed a simple gray ranch in Hawaii into a modern farmhouse, blending contemporary design with cozy elements.
The project started when her personal trainer, Bob Greene, recommended investing in Hawaiian real estate.
After purchasing a secluded plot to prevent commercial development, Oprah enlisted Ellie, a decorator admired for her American country style, to lead the renovation.
Working closely with Ellie, Oprah saw her home undergo extensive changes.
Ellie shifted the decoration strategy from Hawaiian motifs to American antiques that aligned with Oprah’s taste, resulting in a distinctive interior.
As the project’s scope expanded, Jeff Wooley and his team took on the challenge of redesigning the floor plan to enhance flow, elevating ceilings to create a sense of openness, and fitting French doors to seamlessly integrate indoor and outdoor spaces.
A 19th-century weather vane and tailor-made furniture in the living room drew inspiration from the surrounding landscape.
In the master bedroom, design choices prioritized comfort and elegance, featuring terrace access and high ceilings that amplified the sense of space.
This approach to design extended throughout the home, with Oprah’s personal and carefully chosen items adding a layer of intimacy.
Among these, “The Waterboy” by Thomas Hart Benton in the dining room stands out, connecting to her personal narrative.
Antique lighting, a quilt-inspired ceiling pattern, and contemporary appliances strike a balance between functionality and style in the kitchen.
Through this renovation approach, Oprah has skillfully created a living space that not only reflects her personal taste but also harmonizes with Hawaii’s natural beauty.
Oprah’s Farm in Hawaii
Oprah Winfrey owns a total of approximately 2,130 acres of land in Hawaii.
She acquired 850 acres on Maui for $6.4 million, adding to the 1,280 acres she already owned on the island.
Additionally, she purchased another 870 acres on Maui for $6.6 million, bringing her total Maui land holdings to almost 1,000 acres.
It’s no wonder that Oprah has a beautiful farm on this island with so much land available.
Oprah’s farm is situated at almost 4,000 feet elevation on the side of Haleakala, a dormant volcano, where it gets consistent rainfall and plenty of sun.
