Fans of the FX series “American Horror Story” will recognize the grand Greek revival mansion located at Jackson Avenue in New Orleans’ Garden District.

This iconic home, known as Buckner Mansion, served as the haunting Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies in the show’s third season, “Coven.”

A Historical Landmark

Built in 1856 for Henry Sullivan Buckner, a prominent cotton magnate, the mansion stands as the largest surviving home designed by esteemed New Orleans architect Lewis E. Reynolds.

Spanning over 9,000 square feet, this three-story mansion is an architectural masterpiece featuring grand Corinthian-style cornices, brass chandeliers, and a triple parlor with ornamental plasterwork.

The Mansion in “American Horror Story”

In “American Horror Story: Coven,” the mansion’s exterior scenes were filmed to depict the eerie and gothic Miss Robichaux’s Academy, where young witches honed their supernatural abilities.

The mansion’s imposing white columns and signature cast-iron fencing provided a perfect backdrop for the show’s dark and mystical themes.

However, while the exterior played a significant role, the interior scenes were filmed elsewhere.

Historical Significance and Modern Upgrades

Beyond its fame from the TV series, Buckner Mansion holds a rich historical legacy.

After the Buckner family sold the property in 1923, it became the Soule Business College, a respected institution that operated until 1983.

An inscription on the sidewalk pays tribute to its educational past: “From education as the leading cause, the public character its color draws.”

After returning to private ownership in 1983, the mansion underwent several upgrades, including new plumbing and electrical systems.

The current owners, who purchased the property in 1997 for $640,000, modernized the kitchen and bathrooms while preserving the mansion’s historical charm.

Architectural and Supernatural Attractions

Buckner Mansion boasts a grand center hall, dining room, study, and an expansive attic that could potentially add 3,500 square feet of living space.

This property also includes a detached two-car garage and an apartment.

The wraparound porches, with their intricate ironwork, are particularly noteworthy.

Adding to the mansion’s allure is the alleged ghost of Josephine Nicaud, a long-time household staff member who vowed never to leave the Buckners.

Her spirit is rumored to still haunt the halls of the mansion, adding a touch of the supernatural to its storied history.

A Popular Tourist Attraction

Known locally as the “Coven Mansion,” Buckner Mansion attracts numerous visitors who come to admire its grandeur and take photos.

Tours frequently stop outside the gates, allowing fans of “American Horror Story” and history enthusiasts alike to experience a piece of New Orleans’ rich cultural tapestry.
